Professor Amy Lewis’ New Book Uses Star Trek to Explore Leadership and Management Principles
Amy Lewis, professor of management at Texas A&M University–San Antonio, is combining her lifelong passion for Star Trek with her academic expertise in a new leadership book scheduled for publication in the summer of 2027. Titled “To Boldly Go: Leadership Visions from the Future,” the book is part of Emerald Publishing’s popular culture and leadership series, which explores management concepts through well-known franchises.
Co-authored with scholars from the University of Louisiana Monroe and the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater, the book examines topics such as negotiation, conflict resolution, leading organizational change, and the impact of emerging technologies through the lens of the iconic science fiction series.
A self-described lifelong Star Trek fan, Lewis says the franchise’s themes of exploration, collaboration, and striving for a better future make it an ideal framework for making leadership theories more engaging and accessible. The project builds on her previous scholarship connecting Star Trek and management education, including a 2024 journal article and the 2023 book “Entrepreneurial Cosplay.”
