Shakespeare Reimagined
Classic Literature Through a Latine Lens
During a weeklong series titled “The Bard in the Barrio: Latinx Pop Culture and Shakespeare Reimagined,” the University celebrated the enduring influence of William Shakespeare, exploring the intersection of classic literature, Latine culture, and visual storytelling.
The event featured discussions, film screenings, crafts, comics and scholarship highlighting how Shakespeare’s works continue to evolve across cultures and generations. The program was sponsored by the Borderlands Shakespeare Colectiva and departments within the College of Arts and Sciences.
A central focus of the celebration was the University Library’s Latinx Comics Special Collection, which includes more than 80 comics and graphic novels. The collection provided a unique opportunity to connect Shakespeare’s themes of identity, conflict and storytelling with contemporary forms of expression familiar to students.
By blending literature, art, and cultural perspectives, “Bard in the Barrio” showcased the creativity and diversity of scholarship taking place across A&M-San Antonio.
